Abhayagiri Vihara

Located within the sacred city of Anuradhapura, the Abhayagiri Vihara is an extensive monastic complex dating back to the second century BC. Established by King Valagamba, it housed a fraternity of Buddhist monks who maintained strict traditions and way of life, and at its peak in the first century AD it drew scholars from around the world in search of Buddhist philosophy. In its prime, within the complex stood multi-storied buildings with roofs of bronze gilt and baked clay tile, surrounded by high walls and numerous bathing pools. The focal point of the complex is the Abhayagiri dagoba, a hump shaped stupa rising 276-feet and even though missing part of its pinnacle, is believed to be the second largest brick structure in the world.
